Fall is absolutely my favorite time of year for throwing parties! Between the cooler weather, the gorgeous colors, and all the seasonal activities available, there’s just something magical about gathering friends and family together during autumn. With three energetic boys constantly asking when we can have another party, I’ve gotten pretty creative with fall party themes over the years!
Whether you’re planning a birthday celebration, a casual get-together with friends, or just want an excuse to enjoy the season, these 15 fall party themes will give you tons of inspiration! I’ve tried most of these with my own crew, and I’m sharing all the details that made each one special. Get ready to create some amazing autumn memories!
Pumpkin Patch Party
Nothing says fall quite like pumpkins, and a pumpkin patch party is always a hit with kids! I love this theme because you can take it in so many directions. Set up your backyard or party space with hay bales, cornstalks, and pumpkins of all sizes scattered around. Let the kids decorate their own mini pumpkins with paint, stickers, and markers instead of carving (way less messy and safer for little hands!).
For activities, create a pumpkin ring toss game, have a pumpkin rolling race, or set up a photo booth area with pumpkin props. Serve pumpkin-shaped sandwiches, pumpkin cookies, and of course, pumpkin spice everything! My boys absolutely loved the pumpkin bowling we set up last year using small pumpkins as bowling balls. The food for this theme is super simple and fun! S’mores are obviously a must, but we also love doing hot dogs on sticks, foil packet dinners, and warm apple cider. Set up a s’mores bar with different chocolate options, flavored marshmallows, and various cookies or graham crackers. My middle son discovered that peanut butter cups in s’mores are absolutely amazing!
For entertainment, bring out the acoustic guitar if anyone plays, tell stories, or play classic camping games. We love doing shadow puppets and singing silly songs. Just make sure you have plenty of roasting sticks and keep a close eye on the little ones around the fire. This is definitely one of those fall party themes that adults enjoy just as much as the kids!
Apple Orchard Adventure
Apple picking season is such a special time, and an apple orchard theme brings all that fun right to your party! Decorate with bushel baskets, red and green apples, and apple garlands. You can create an adorable backdrop that looks like apple trees for photos. Even if you can’t actually go apple picking, you can recreate the experience at home!
Set up apple-themed activities like bobbing for apples (always hilarious!), an apple relay race where kids balance apples on spoons, or apple printing art projects. For food, go all out with apple-everything: caramel apples, apple cider donuts, apple pie, apple nachos with caramel drizzle, and fresh apple slices with different dipping options like caramel, peanut butter, and chocolate.
One year we did an apple taste test with different varieties, and the kids loved rating them! You could also do a caramel apple decorating station where everyone customizes their own with toppings like crushed cookies, sprinkles, and nuts. Harvest Festival Celebration
A harvest festival party captures everything wonderful about autumn in one big celebration! Think county fair meets backyard party with all the classic fall elements. We’re talking ring toss, bean bag throws, a small petting zoo if you can arrange it, and definitely a pie-eating contest!
Decorate with cornstalks, hay bales, sunflowers, and gourds. Hang paper lanterns and use checkered tablecloths for that authentic festival feel. Create a “farmers market” area where kids can shop for play vegetables or small treats. For activities, create a nature scavenger hunt where kids search for specific leaves, pinecones, or acorns. Set up a craft station where they can make pinecone bird feeders or leaf rubbings. We did a “build a nest” game where teams competed to create the best bird nest using natural materials, and it was such a hit! You can also play animal charades or have a woodland creature dress-up station.
The food can be super creative with this theme! Make “acorn” treats using donut holes and chocolate kisses, serve “bird seed” (trail mix), create a “forest floor” dessert with chocolate pudding and crushed cookies, and use tree stump cake stands for display. This is one of those fall party themes that looks absolutely adorable in photos and creates such a whimsical atmosphere!
Football Tailgate Party
Fall and football just go together, and a tailgate party is perfect for celebrating both! Even if you’re not huge sports fans, the tailgate atmosphere is so much fun and super casual. Set up your party area like a parking lot tailgate with folding tables, team colors everywhere, and plenty of comfortable seating. If you have a favorite team, go all in with their colors and decorations!
The food is definitely the star of a tailgate party! Think classic game day favorites like sliders, wings, nachos, chili, potato skins, and plenty of dips with chips. Set up a build-your-own hot dog or burger bar where everyone can customize their meal. Don’t forget the coolers filled with drinks! My boys love when we do mini versions of everything so they feel like they’re eating real tailgate food.
For activities, set up backyard football games, cornhole tournaments, or a football toss challenge. You could even watch a game on a projector outside if weather permits! Face painting in team colors is always popular with kids, and you can do a halftime show with silly performances. Set up a pretzel-making station where kids can twist their own dough (my boys thought this was the coolest thing ever!). You could also do a root beer tasting with different brands and have kids vote on their favorite.
Activities can include traditional German games like hammerschlagen (nail pounding), a stein-holding contest with plastic mugs filled with water, and a polka dancing lesson that usually ends in lots of giggles! Okay, I know Halloween technically gets its own celebration, but a Halloween-themed fall party a few weeks before the actual holiday is so much fun! This gives kids a chance to wear their costumes early and gets everyone excited for the main event. Go all out with spooky decorations like cobwebs, skeletons, ghosts, and jack-o’-lanterns. Create different zones like a haunted house area, a monster mash dance floor, and a potion-making station.
The activities are endless with this theme! Set up a costume parade, organize a mummy-wrapping race using toilet paper, create a spider web obstacle course with yarn, and have a monster freeze dance party. For slightly older kids, you can make it a bit spookier with a haunted maze or ghost stories. My youngest loves the “eyeball” (peeled grape) and “worms” (cooked spaghetti) sensory boxes!
Food-wise, get creative with spooky presentations! Make “witches’ fingers” cookies, “monster” sandwiches, “ghost” pizzas, and a punch bowl with dry ice for effect (supervised, of course!). Celebrate everyone’s favorite fall fashion with a cozy sweater party! Invite guests to wear their favorite fall sweaters (ugly sweaters encouraged!) and decorate with all things cozy. Think lots of plaid, knitted textures, warm colors, and comfy seating areas with tons of pillows and blankets. String up paper cutouts of sweaters and mittens for adorable decorations!
This theme is perfect for a more relaxed, indoor gathering when the weather gets chilly. Set up cozy activity stations like a hot cocoa bar with all the toppings, a cookie decorating area with sweater-shaped cookies, and a crafting corner where kids can design their own paper sweaters. We also played “pin the pattern on the sweater” which was hilarious!
For food, serve comfort foods that match the cozy vibe: warm soup in mugs, grilled cheese sandwiches cut into fun shapes, mac and cheese, and lots of warm beverages. Create a “warmth station” with different hot drinks like apple cider, hot chocolate, and warm lemonade. Have a sweater contest with categories like “coziest,” “most colorful,” and “silliest.” This is one of those fall party themes that’s all about comfort and feeling good!

You can even name each scarecrow and create little signs with their “stories”!
The main activity for this party should definitely be building scarecrows! Divide guests into teams and provide each group with old clothes, straw or newspaper for stuffing, markers for faces, and accessories like hats and bandanas. My boys got so creative with this, and we still have their scarecrows displayed in our yard! You can also play scarecrow-themed games like “stuff the scarecrow” relay races or “pin the hat on the scarecrow.”

We added silly challenges like “do five jumping jacks” or “tell a corny joke” at different points, and the kids thought it was hilarious!

Create a “lost in the maze” survival pack with trail mix and juice boxes. You could also set up a corn shucking race as an activity. Think pumpkin bowling, apple bobbing, a corn hole tournament, ring toss with mason jars, and a cake walk with fall treats. We recruited older cousins and neighbors to be booth operators, and they had just as much fun as the little kids! Set up a “thankful tree” where guests can write what they’re grateful for on paper leaves and attach them to branches in a vase. Create a gratitude craft station where kids make thankful placemats, gratitude journals, or appreciation cards for people they care about. We did a thankfulness scavenger hunt where kids found items representing things to be grateful for, and it sparked such sweet conversations!
For food, serve a mini Thanksgiving feast with turkey sliders, mashed potato bars, cranberry sauce, rolls, and pumpkin pie. You could also do a potluck where everyone brings their favorite fall dish to share. Play games that encourage sharing and kindness, and maybe do a service project together like making cards for nursing home residents or packing food donations.
