I usually let the kids vote on what to watch first, which somehow always ends up being Elf at our house! Set up individual building stations for each person or team with their own kit and plenty of royal icing for “glue.” Provide tons of candy decorations like gumdrops, peppermints, candy canes, M&Ms, licorice, pretzels, and anything else colorful and festive you can find. I usually hit the after-Halloween sales and stock up on discounted candy for this exact purpose!
Make it a competition with different categories and silly prizes – most creative, most likely to survive a windstorm, most colorful, best use of candy, or funniest design. My personal favorite is the reindeer food because it’s quick, mess-contained, and the kids love the magic of leaving it out for Santa’s reindeer!
Cover your craft table with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth for easy cleanup – this is non-negotiable with kids! Organize all supplies in separate containers or muffin tins so everything is easy to access. Provide examples of finished crafts so people know what they’re working toward. Some classics include “The Night Before Christmas,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Polar Express,” and “The Snowman.” I usually let each of my boys pick one book to include in story time. You could even invite different guests to take turns reading if they’re comfortable doing so – kids especially love when different people read with different voices and expressions!
Make it extra cozy by dimming the lights and letting the glow from the Christmas tree provide most of the lighting. Maybe light some cinnamon or pine-scented candles (safely away from little hands!). There’s something absolutely magical about piling everyone into cars and driving around to see all the decorated houses. My boys get so excited pointing out their favorite displays and arguing about which house has the best lights!
Before your party, scout out the best light displays in your area so you know where to go. Many neighborhoods have streets that go all-out with coordinated displays and decorations. Map out a route that takes about 20-30 minutes so it’s long enough to be special but not so long that little ones get restless. You could even make it a progressive tour where you visit a few different neighborhoods!
Make the tour extra special by creating treat bags for each car with Christmas cookies, candy canes, and maybe a small bottle of water. Play Christmas music during the drive and encourage everyone to sing along! If you have a larger group at your Christmas Eve party, coordinate a caravan of cars so everyone can participate together. Some families like to bring thermoses of hot chocolate to sip during the tour. When you return home, it’s the perfect time to say goodbyes and send everyone home with full hearts and wonderful memories.
