Planning a Halloween party when you’ve got three energetic boys running around (and trust me, I know the chaos!) can feel overwhelming, but it’s actually one of my favorite things to do each year! There’s something magical about watching kids get excited about spooky games, silly costumes, and way too much candy. The key to a successful party is having a solid lineup of halloween party activities for kids that keep everyone engaged and having a blast!
After hosting countless Halloween parties and learning what works (and what definitely doesn’t!), I’ve discovered that the best activities are ones that are simple to set up, don’t require a ton of expensive supplies, and can handle the energy of excited kids hopped up on sugar! Whether you’re planning a small gathering or inviting the whole neighborhood, these activity ideas will help you create a spooktacular celebration that kids will remember long after the last piece of candy is gone!
Set Up a Monster Mash Dance Party
Nothing gets kids moving and laughing quite like a good old-fashioned dance party! I’ve found that dedicating a space in your home or yard for dancing is one of the easiest halloween party activities for kids to pull off. All you need is a speaker and a playlist of Halloween-themed songs like “Monster Mash,” “Thriller,” and “Ghostbusters!”
To make it extra special, I love adding some fun elements like glow sticks, black lights, or even a disco ball! You can turn it into a freeze dance game where kids have to freeze in their spookiest pose when the music stops. My boys absolutely love this, and it’s a fantastic way to burn off some of that Halloween energy!
Consider creating different dance challenges throughout the party. You could have a “zombie walk” contest, a “witch’s broom dance” where kids pretend to ride broomsticks, or a “mummy wrap” where they dance while trying to stay wrapped in toilet paper! The sillier, the better! These activities require minimal prep and keep kids entertained for a surprisingly long time.

Instead of traditional pumpkin carving (which can be messy and honestly a bit dangerous with little ones!), I always set up a pumpkin decorating station! This is one of those halloween party activities for kids that works for all ages and lets everyone’s creativity shine. Grab small to medium-sized pumpkins from your local grocery store or pumpkin patch, and set up a table with tons of decorating supplies!
My go-to supplies include paint, markers, stickers, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, glitter glue, foam shapes, and anything else colorful and fun! I spread out a plastic tablecloth for easy cleanup and let the kids go wild. You’d be amazed at what they come up with! I’ve seen everything from superhero pumpkins to unicorn pumpkins to silly face pumpkins that had us all cracking up!
To make it even more organized, I like to set up different stations around the table. One area has paints and brushes, another has stickers and googly eyes, and another has glue and embellishments. This way, kids can rotate around and try different techniques without everyone crowding into one spot!
The best part? Kids get to take their decorated pumpkins home as party favors! It’s a win-win because they’re proud of what they created, and you don’t have to worry about buying separate goody bags. Just make sure to have the pumpkins labeled with each child’s name so there’s no confusion when it’s time to leave!
Organize a Spooky Scavenger Hunt
A Halloween scavenger hunt is hands down one of the most exciting halloween party activities for kids! My boys talk about our annual scavenger hunt for weeks afterward! You can do this indoors or outdoors depending on your space and weather. The key is to hide Halloween-themed items around your party area and give kids a list of things to find!
I typically hide things like plastic spiders, mini pumpkins, skeleton bones, rubber bats, ghost figurines, and wrapped candy! You can make it easier for younger kids by using pictures instead of words on their scavenger hunt list. For older kids, add riddles or clues that lead them to each item! My middle son loves the challenge of figuring out the clues!
To keep things fair and fun, I divide kids into teams or give them each their own colored bag to collect items in. You can also set it up so that everyone is looking for the same types of items, but there are enough for everyone to find. This prevents the faster kids from grabbing everything before others get a chance!
Consider adding a special “golden pumpkin” or “mystery item” that’s worth extra points or comes with a special prize! This adds an extra element of excitement, and kids will search high and low to find it! Don’t forget to set boundaries so kids know where they can and can’t search – learned that lesson the hard way when kids started opening closets and cabinets!
Set Up Halloween Craft Stations
Craft stations are perfect for giving kids a quieter activity option between all the running around! I always include at least one or two craft stations as part of my halloween party activities for kids lineup. These activities are great for kids who might feel overwhelmed by louder games or just need a creative outlet!
Some of my favorite Halloween crafts include making paper plate monsters, decorating trick-or-treat bags, creating pipe cleaner spiders, building ghost garlands, or designing Halloween masks! The key is choosing crafts that are simple enough that kids can do them mostly independently but fun enough that they’ll actually want to participate!
I set up each craft station with all the supplies needed in one spot, along with a finished example so kids can see what they’re making. Little bowls or containers for supplies keep things organized and make it easy for kids to access what they need! I also put down newspaper or plastic tablecloths because things WILL get messy – especially with glue and glitter involved!
One trick I’ve learned is to have a designated “drying area” where kids can place their finished crafts! This prevents wet paint or glue from getting everywhere as kids carry their creations around. You can use a separate table or even just a section of floor covered with newspaper. Label each spot with the child’s name so everyone knows which masterpiece is theirs!
Plan Active Halloween Games
Let’s be real – kids have SO much energy, especially when they’re excited about Halloween! That’s why I always include several active games in my halloween party activities for kids plan. These games help burn off energy and keep everyone engaged and laughing!
Mummy wrap is always a huge hit! Divide kids into teams of two or three, give each team a few rolls of toilet paper, and see who can wrap their “mummy” the fastest! My boys think this is absolutely hilarious, and the photos are priceless! Just be prepared for toilet paper everywhere – it’s all part of the fun!
Another favorite is “Ghost Bowling” where you set up white painted bottles or cans decorated like ghosts and let kids knock them down with a small pumpkin! You can also do “Pin the Spider on the Web,” “Witch Hat Ring Toss,” or “Eyeball Relay Races” where kids carry plastic eyeballs on spoons! These games are simple to set up but provide tons of entertainment!
Don’t forget about classic games with a Halloween twist! Musical chairs becomes “Musical Tombstones,” hot potato becomes “Hot Pumpkin,” and Simon Says becomes “The Witch Says!” Kids love familiar games with a spooky spin, and you don’t need any special supplies. I always keep a few of these in my back pocket in case we need to fill extra time or if planned activities finish faster than expected!
Create a Halloween Snack Station
Food is such an important part of any party, and making it an activity itself is genius! A Halloween snack station where kids can create their own treats is one of those halloween party activities for kids that combines creativity with satisfying hungry tummies! Plus, it gives kids something to do while keeping them in one spot for a bit!
My favorite setup is a “Decorate Your Own Cookie” station! I bake simple sugar cookies in Halloween shapes ahead of time, then set out different colored frostings, sprinkles, candy eyes, and other edible decorations. Kids love making their cookies as silly or spooky as they want! Just make sure to have wet wipes nearby because things get sticky fast!
You can also do a “Build Your Own Trail Mix” station with Halloween-themed ingredients like candy corn, chocolate chips, pretzels, popcorn, and orange and black M&Ms! Give each child a small bag to fill with their custom mix. This works great as both an activity and a take-home party favor!
Other fun food activities include decorating cupcakes, making “monster mouth” apple slices with peanut butter and marshmallow teeth, or assembling “witches’ broomsticks” with pretzel sticks and cheese. The key is choosing activities that are age-appropriate and not too complicated. Kids should be able to do most of it themselves with minimal adult help!
Include Quiet Story Time or Movie Break
Even with the most exciting halloween party activities for kids, there comes a point when everyone needs a break! I always plan for a quieter activity toward the middle or end of the party. This gives kids a chance to recharge and prevents overstimulation and meltdowns – trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way with my three boys!
Story time is perfect for younger kids! Gather everyone in a cozy spot with pillows and blankets, dim the lights, and read a not-too-scary Halloween book. Some of my favorites include “Room on the Broom,” “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything,” and “Five Little Pumpkins!” You can even use a flashlight for dramatic effect!
For older kids or longer parties, consider showing a Halloween movie! Set up a viewing area with bean bags or floor cushions, pop some popcorn, and put on a kid-friendly Halloween classic like “Hocus Pocus,” “Casper,” “Hotel Transylvania,” or “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!” This gives kids a chance to relax and gives you a moment to clean up from earlier activities!
You can make movie time extra special by creating a “concession stand” where kids can grab popcorn, juice boxes, and small treats! This makes them feel like they’re at a real movie theater. Plus, it keeps everyone settled in one spot for a while, which is a blessing when you’re managing a group of excited kids!
Making Halloween Magic Happen
Planning halloween party activities for kids doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive! The most important thing is creating an environment where kids can have fun, be creative, and make memories with their friends. Mix active games with quieter activities, include both structured and free-play options, and don’t forget to build in time for snacks and breaks! Your party doesn’t need to be perfect – it just needs to be fun!
Remember, the best parties are the ones where YOU’re having fun too! Don’t put so much pressure on yourself that you can’t enjoy watching the kids laugh and play. Take lots of pictures, embrace the mess, and know that even if something doesn’t go exactly as planned, the kids probably won’t even notice!
